Editorial

Dear colleagues,

Welcome to our opening edition of Excipients Insight for 2017 and although it may seem a little late in the year, IPEC Europe extends its best wishes to you for an exciting and productive 2017!

This edition features highlights of our annual excipient forum - held in Monte Carlo in early February - which also marked the occasion of IPEC Europe's 25th Anniversary. As always, we assembled a programme focussing on aspects of regulation, business practice and technology designed to contribute to your operations and position you well for future challenges. Specifically, sessions on topics such as continuous manufacturing and data integrity lent themselves to this goal.

The session on data integrity is likely the beginning of a series of events on this very ‘live’ topic, which can only grow in importance to our members. Equally, the celebration of a milestone anniversary also allows for reflection on past achievements and how they can direct our future. Through the participation of EDQM’s director in the programme, it reminded us of past and planned collaborations and that they are relevant still to global harmonisation of pharmacopoeias, for the ultimate benefit of patients. Also, I cannot fail to recognise revisions of three of our most important assets, namely the IPEC-PQG GMP Guide, and the IPEC Guides on GDP and Quality Agreements which are now 'launch ready'. These serve a global community of those involved in some way with excipients and to the many who participated in their creation and revision, you should feel very proud of this tremendous achievement which adds great credibility to the IPEC brand.

We welcomed a satisfying number of delegates at the event, which featured participants from the whole spectrum of our stakeholders including regulators, excipient suppliers, pharmaceutics companies and sister associations such as FECC and EFCG. For those of you unable to attend a report on the event can be seen in this edition of Excipients Insight. In general the programme was well received by participants with a high proportion of attendees reporting they are eager to attend similar future events and would recommend the IPEC Europe Forum to colleagues. Thank you!

Our annual general meeting follows the Forum of course, and was held on 3 February. Importantly, it allowed me the opportunity to reaffirm our strategy and direction for IPEC Europe in 2017, the planned programme of work and the budget to allow us to execute the same. While a full review of 2016 and plans for 2017 is scheduled for our March edition, key to success this year is delivery on those outward-facing objectives to stimulate knowledge of excipients, enhancing our presence with stakeholders, and developing collaborations with the aim of recruiting and retaining members. To accomplish this we need willing volunteers, so let me close now taking the opportunity to make a call directly to you all, to join in IPEC Europe activities and help us deliver our promise! If you are interested or have any other questions about  IPEC Europe, please contact us at info@ipec-europe.org.

Enjoy reading and kind regards

Frank Milek
